Mapping, Assessing and Mitigating Climate & Biodiversity-Related Value Chain Risks

Mapping, Assessing and Mitigating Climate & Biodiversity-Related Value Chain Risks

Climate change and biodiversity loss pose serious risks to the global economy, with extreme weather events already causing billions in losses. Financial systems are particularly vulnerable, so understanding these risks is crucial. This project aims to further this understanding by applying green data science, combining climate science, biodiversity, and sustainable finance research, to find better ways to identify, mitigate and ultimately manage these risks.

A key component of the project is a perceptions survey, which will regularly gather new data to improve our understanding of climate risks. The survey will also ask respondents to predict future industry trends, helping researchers see how accurate these forecasts were when compared with real-world changes. The data will support a dynamic risk dashboard which will help businesses and other stakeholders to identify and manage climate and biodiversity-related risks.

The project will also explore potential policy solutions to help financial systems better prepare for climate and biodiversity-related risks. By studying how different parts of the economy are connected, this research will support smarter decision-making for a more secure, sustainable future.

Project Goals

  • Assess Climate and Biodiversity Risks

The project will measure risks linked to climate change and biodiversity loss. This information will create a Risk Dashboard, that will highlight key warning signs for financial risks.

  • Gather Expert Insights

A perceptions survey will collect views from industry experts, supported by interviews and workshops with key stakeholders. The survey will inform the risk dashboard on a rolling basis and highlight high risk areas which require action.

  • Risk & Opportunity

We partner with industry to evaluate climate, biodiversity, and water-related risks while developing practical solutions for these industries and communities.

  • Develop Policy Solutions

The project will study how climate and biodiversity risks interact across industries. This work will lead to a guidebook of clear actions that policymakers, businesses, and financial institutions can refer to mitigate these risks.
