A Collaboration to Open Access

PhD student Dario Di Girolamo is studying the drivers of biodiversity change in Lough Neagh through its food web. He has recently collaborated with archivists and librarians at Ulster University. Together, they are making an important body of research more accessible.

Preserving a Scientific Legacy

In collaboration with Professor David Jewson, an expert in freshwater science with over 50 years of experience and one of the leading historical researchers on Lough Neagh, they have successfully digitised and curated 27 PhD theses spanning the past five decades (since 1973).

The collection, which includes Professor Jewson’s own thesis, creates a vital archive of ecological and environmental research that was once only available at the Coleraine campus.

Building on the Past

“As part of my research, I was looking for historical data on Lough Neagh, specifically from the Traad Point Freshwater Research Station, and discovered that these PhD theses were only available in person at Ulster University,” says Dario. “Now, they can be accessed and shared much more easily.”
