Cat Jones

Cat is a freshwater ecologist specialising in the role of nutrients in freshwater ecosystems and their influence on water quality.

They lead efforts at the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water to gather and organise scientific evidence on how climate change, biodiversity loss, and water quality affect ecosystems across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

Their work includes several projects within the Evidence, Discovery & Integration research theme:

  • Collate and Assess Evidence for Fluxes and Standing Stocks of Carbon, Biodiversity and Water across Key Ecosystem Types

  • Collate and Assess Evidence Linking Water Quality, Climate and Biodiversity to Health and Well-being

  • Collate and Assess Evidence for Nature-Based Solutions for Key Ecosystem Types

Cat investigates impacts on both ecosystem and human health, exploring how technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), can help collate and analyse large volumes of environmental data. This research informs the development of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to tackle societal challenges arising from climate change, biodiversity loss, and declining water quality.

Previously, Cat worked in Canada and the United States with various government and community agencies, addressing water quality issues in the Kawartha Lakes in Ontario and the Great Lakes.
