Colin Manning

Colin is a Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water Funded Investigator, exploring historical variability in extremely wet and windy winters and analysing how the frequency and intensity of these extreme weather events may change over the next decade. He works on a team within the Risks & Opportunities theme

Based at the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter but affiliated with Newcastle University’s School of Engineering, he is part of the high-resolution climate modeling research group. His work focuses on extreme weather events, examining their causes, impacts, and potential future changes.

Recently, Colin has concentrated on winter storms in Western Europe, investigating the conditions that drive extreme winds, heavy rainfall, and their co-occurrence. He has also collaborated with electricity network operators to assess resilience challenges posed by extreme weather and improve predictions of power outages during severe storms.
