Hayley Fowler

Prof. Hayley J. Fowler is Professor of Climate Change Impacts in the School of Engineering at Newcastle University. In the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water, she leads the Risk & Opportunities theme within our industry projects.

Her research interests lie in improving physical understanding of changing weather extremes and delivering high-resolution projections for climate adaptation. She has pioneered new downscaling techniques to bridge the gap between climate modellers and users of climate scenarios. She is passionate about the need for transdisciplinary work, bridging hydrological, meteorological, and climate communities to deliver relevant information to industry and society on climate and weather risks. She regularly delivers lectures to engage the public on the climate crisis.

She co-founded and directs the Centre of Climate and Environmental Resilience at Newcastle University. She advises the UK government on climate resilience, serving on the Adaptation Committee of the UK’s Climate Change Committee, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Science Expert Group and as Chair of the Science Review Group for the Met Office Hadley Centre Climate Programme. She won the European Geosciences Union’s Sergey Soloviev Medal in 2024 and is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. She was a contributing author to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group 1 Annual Assessment Report 6 and was President of the British Hydrological Society from 2021-2023.
