Our People
Jens Carlsson
Dr. Jens Carlsson is an Associate Professor at University College Dublin, specialising in the conservation genetics of aquatic ecosystems. Over the past decade, his research has focused on environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques, using molecular tools to detect individual species—such as pink salmon and sea lamprey—and to assess biodiversity across rivers, coastal areas, and deep-sea vents.
Dr. Carlsson’s group develops innovative eDNA assays and molecular methods, including qPCR for species detection and high-throughput genotyping, and is exploring nanopore sequencing for advanced applications such as metatranscriptomics and viral discovery. His work addresses critical conservation questions, including the impacts of habitat fragmentation, the spread of invasive species, and biodiversity assessment in threatened ecosystems.
His research spans both applied and fundamental studies, including herring stock identification, salmon disease transcriptomics, and marine biotechnology, demonstrating expertise in leveraging cutting-edge molecular techniques to support the conservation and management of aquatic resources.
