Jonathan Turner

Dr. Jonathan Turner is based in the School of Geography at UCD. His research focuses on applied river science and fluvial geomorphology, with an emphasis on understanding physical river processes to support catchment management and policy implementation.

He is the lead investigator on the EPA HymoGuide project, which aims to develop guidance for the development of regulatory standards for hydromorphology in Ireland. He also leads hydromorphology work packages on several national projects, including the EPA-funded WaterFutures project and HydroSED, a DAFM-funded project examining the impacts of forestry operations.

His published work includes process-based studies on fine sediment flux, investigations into the impacts of low-head dams on sediment transport, and research on longer term river response to environmental change. This work contributes to technical guidance supporting improved monitoring, sediment management, and restoration planning, and he serves as an academic advisor to the national Hydromorphology Expert Group.

In addition to his research activities, Dr Turner is Director of the MSc in Risk, Resilience & Sustainability at UCD, and from 2026 he will become Programme Director for the new MSc in Applied Catchment Science and Management, reflecting his expanding role in catchment-focused research and training. He is also Co-Director of the UCD Geoscience Itrax Facility, which provides high-resolution XRF geochemical scanning services for core analysis.
