Sean Wilkinson
Sean Wilkinson is a structural engineer who specialises in infrastructure resilience, focusing on how communities can better withstand natural hazards. His research examines how critical infrastructure – such as roads, bridges, and utilities – responds during disasters and how these systems can protect communities.
Sean applies principles from earthquake engineering, designing infrastructure systems that can absorb shocks and continue functioning even under extreme stress, following a “bend, not break” approach. His work aims to identify robust infrastructure systems that maintain service and minimise disruption, even when exposed to hazards beyond expected levels.
As climate change increases the uncertainty of weather events, Sean’s research seeks innovative ways to help communities adapt to extreme events that may exceed current climate projections, ensuring that both natural and built environments remain resilient in an uncertain future.
