Xiaobin Qiu
Dr Xiaobin Qiu is a Research Associate at Newcastle University, where he works with the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water. His research focuses on rainfall and how it affects climate, water resources, and flood risk across Great Britain and Ireland.
As part of the Climate + team, Dr Qiu is developing a new high-resolution rainfall dataset. This dataset shows how much rain falls every hour and may also include 15-minute data. To do this, he combines information from weather radar, rain gauges, and satellites. He also improves data quality so the results are accurate and reliable.
In addition, Dr Qiu studies uncertainty in rainfall data. This work helps users understand how confident they can be in the results. As a result, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners can use the data more effectively.
The team will compare the dataset with existing national and global products. It will also support the Climate Atlas project. Through this project, the data will help inform responses to climate change, biodiversity loss, and water quality challenges.
Previously, Dr Qiu completed his PhD in Civil Engineering at Newcastle University. During his doctoral research, he focused on improving rainfall measurements and analysing extreme rainfall events across Great Britain. Overall, his work aims to provide better climate data for hydrology, climate science, and flood-risk management.
