The Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water (Climate +) is partnering with global reinsurance broker Gallagher Re to improve the assessment and modelling of combined flooding and high wind risks, helping insurers prepare for increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events.
Gallagher Re’s investment is supported by matched public funding through Climate +. Newcastle University is leading the research, drawing on expertise from across the international Climate + network.
Colin Manning, Research Associate at Newcastle University, said:
“Recent years have highlighted the risks posed by the combined impacts of flooding and extreme winds. Our goal is to deepen our understanding of their causes and provide outputs that will strengthen our ability to prepare for them. We are delighted to collaborate with Gallagher Re on this project whose expertise and industry perspective will be invaluable to maximising the project’s benefits”.
The collaboration reflects a growing trend of research–industry partnerships, bringing together academic expertise and practical insurance industry insight to tackle complex climate risks that no single sector can address alone. By applying advanced modelling techniques, the project aims to provide insurers and policymakers with better tools to prepare for the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events across the UK, Ireland and beyond.
