The Policy Response Unit (PRU) is currently working with Ireland’s National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to provide inputs to the drafting of the National Restoration Plan (NRP), part of Ireland’s response to the EU Nature Restoration Regulation (Regulation 2024/1991). The PRU will also provide updates on these texts as the draft NRP progresses and following submission of the first draft to the European Commission on 1st September 2026.

Expected Outputs

The following reports and briefs are anticipated:
  • High level policy mapping document referencing global, regional and national biodiversity policies.

  • Report on overarching policy landscape and coherence (for consideration as part of the drafting of Ireland’s National Restoration Plan).

  • Assessment report of unavoidable habitat transformations.

  • Report mapping existing range of relevant nature restoration programmes and measures.

  • Report on the potential private biodiversity funding landscape.

  • Report on cross-cutting co-benefits that could inform the assessment of potential socio-economic impacts of the Nature Restoration Plan.

  • Report on estimates of, and how to deliver, potential private financing for the National Restoration Plan.

  • Report on subsidies that negatively affect the meeting of the targets and the fulfilment of the Nature Restoration Plan

  • Contributions to the ‘Gaps to Greenways: Research for Biodiversity Policy’ meeting hosted by All Island Climate & Biodiversity Research Network in Trinity College Dublin
  • Presentation to the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Environment Research Coordination Group.
  • Presentation at the Land Use Review Stakeholder Engagement Workshop on Innovative Place Based Approaches.
  • Ongoing engagement with Irish government departments.
