Data Space and Computing Engine

Research at the Climate + Co-Centre consumes and produces a wide variety of data. Without a proper system to catalogue it, this data can end up scattered and disconnected, making it harder for researchers to share, work together and conduct meaningful analysis.

Therefore, this project is building a federated digital platform called the Climate + Biodiversity + Water Data Space (CBW-Data Space). It will act as a central portal which catalogues and provides accessibility to Climate +’s data across different repositories and data custodians.

The platform will potentially catalogue two types of data:

  1. Data that is consumed by Climate + researcher
  2. Data produced by Climate + research, such as climate simulations and environmental measurements

All of this will be shared across Climate + research teams wherever possible, making it easier for projects to connect their findings and work towards joined-up conclusions. Some data, like information shared with industry partners, will have controlled access where needed to protect sensitive or commercially valuable information.

The Compute Engine provides accessibility to different high performance computing environments that are available to Climate + researchers to handle complex modelling, simulations, and data analysis. This will give researchers the tools they need to process large datasets quickly and efficiently.

Project Goals

  • Establish a working group composed of ICHEC, NI-HPC, Climate + researchers and data providers.

  • Co-design the Climate + Biodiversity + Water Data Space (CBW-Data Space) and Core Computing Engine (CCE).

  • Build and test the Climate+ Data Space to increase FAIR-ness of Climate + data.

  • Ensure the platform and computing engine are available to all research teams across Climate + that need a reliable, secure system for managing and analysing data.
