Current climate monitoring systems in different countries use different methods, which can create errors that obscure true climate patterns. These systems also don’t always use the best available data or state-of-the-art methods.
This project aims to create a more accurate and consistent climate dataset for the UK and Ireland. It will use the same high-quality methods across both countries to track key climate changes and their effects on water systems.
These datasets are meant for research and won’t replace the real-time climate reports from national weather services. However, if they prove to be more accurate, we will aim work with the UK Met Office and Met Éireann to help them incorporate these improvements.
Project Goals

Collect all relevant original data from a Maynooth University project on access to global land and marine in-situ holdings.

Identify and rescue additional climate data that might be missing or difficult to access. To do this, we will use participatory teaching methods and involve citizen scientists—members of the public who contribute to research.

Apply different methods to check the quality of the climate and water data, making it more consistent and organised it into a structured format for the UK and Ireland.

Share the collected and improved data with internal users such as researchers and external users such as the UK Met Office or Met Éireann
