Children and young people have a right to participate in decisions which affect them, including those on climate change and biodiversity loss.
However, they are often excluded from making decisions, despite increasing recognition that they have both the ability and the desire to help work on solutions.
Therefore, this PhD project is exploring the participation of children and young people (those under 18 years) in environmental decision-making across Ireland, Northern Ireland and/or Great Britain.
The project’s main goal is to enhance the voices of children and young people in decisions on climate, biodiversity and water policy, which will lead to more fair and sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.
Project Goals
-
To understand how children and young children perceive their own involvement in environmental decision making, and the openness for civic engagement of formal and informal public spaces
-
To explore the different places and ways young people can get involved in decisions about the environment, from school projects and youth councils to protests and community meetings
-
To look at how adults and decision-makers note young people’s role in the decision-making process
-
To find out how these spaces connect to local, national and international policies, and whether young people’s voices influence them
-
To figure out what works best and come up with recommendations for promoting child-centred environmental decisions
